After our mini farm stay, we brought home a couple of sunflowers to observe. I posted earlier about the beautiful sunflowers at our friend's home here.
Celeste and I wanted to have a better look at each part of this composite flower and "dissect" them.
"Dissection is the process of disassembling and observing something to determine its internal structure" from Wikipedia.
We talked about each part of the flower. The petals on the outside are called rays and the centre is the disc. Celeste plucked the rays out first.
We looked at the petals through the magnifying glass. We then pulled out the disc florets out or what was left of them. The disc florets are the ones that turn into seeds but on these sunflowers I don't think they do. We also looked at these through the magnifying glass (bottom left photo above).
We took apart each flower. I really like those orange-red petals.
We looked at the spirals on the disc of the flowers and that reminded us of the Fibonacci videos by Vi Hart:
