Book Sharing :: "I is for Island" and "That's Why We Don't Eat Animals"

We love to read and I still love to read aloud to my children, no matter their age. We visit the public library at least once a week and moving to a new place meant a whole new library catalogue!

Here are two books I want to share with you that we enjoyed recently.

The first one is I is for Island: A Prince Edward Island Alphabet written by Hugh MacDonald. This title is part of an alphabet book series that is wonderful! We used these a lot during our homeschool days. You should be able to locate these at your local library.

You can check out all the titles at Sleeping Bear Press. There are teacher's guides full of interesting activities for most titles, just click on the link at the top of the site's home page. You can use these alphabet books to learn about all the Canadian provinces or the American States, and there are also other topics such as the Olympic games, the Titanic, aviation, historical events, holidays, etc...

This title was just released and I requested it from the library. We learned more facts about our new island home, for example we didn't know the island has almost 100 named rivers! The author tells us that they are more streams than rivers, but they are perfect for kayaks and canoes. The illustrations by Brenda Jones were beautiful.

The other book I would like to share is That's Why We Don't Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans, Vegetarians, and All Living Things by Ruby Roth. My oldest daughter and I are vegetarians and we found this book a nice gentle introduction to this topic for children. Without being too graphic, the book explains the living conditions of factory farms for pigs, chickens, turkeys and other animals. The book also talks about endangered species and the rainforest.
