Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas ~ Book Review

Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas is written by Jim Ottaviani with drawings by Maris Wicks. It is a graphic novel about three amazing women scientists. What they have in common is their studies of primates and the influences they all had in those fields.

Jane Goodall

Jane Goodall is known internationally for her work with chimpanzees and animal rights. She witnessed chimpanzees using tools to feed themselves and that changed how they were perceived by humans.

Dian Fossey

Dian Fossey studied gorillas and also worked to protect them, trying to stop poachers from hurting them. The movie Gorillas in the Mist is about her story.

Birute Galdikas

Birute Galdikas studied orangutans. She is known as a a pioneer and leading authority on orangutans.

The Trimates, a prologue (about Birute) and an epilogue finish up this amazing book. The Trimates is the name given by Dr. Leaky to the trio of these three women scientists. He sent each of them on their expeditions to study primates and was a huge influence on their lives.

Celeste and I had read other books about Jane Goodall before, so we were familiar with some of her story, but we hadn't read about Dian Fossey or Birute Galdikas. All three women are fascinating to read about. This format of graphic novel was very enjoyable for both Celeste and I. Celeste was completely absorbed with this book and didn't put it down until she was done, she told me she loved reading about each of these women scientists and their field work!

I found a great teacher's guide at the First Second Books website: Primates Teacher's Guide.  It will be a great help to chat with Celeste a little more about this book. The book also includes a great bibliography to further our reading!
